Sarah McBride Becomes First Transgender Member of Congress

On election day, Delaware voters chose progress in Sarah McBride, elected as their sole voice in the House of Representatives and the first out transgender person ever in Congress.

McBride previously served in the Delaware State Senate as the Chair of Health and Social Services Committee. She acquired a background in human and civil rights advocacy before entering politics and becoming the first out transgender state senator in U.S. history in 2020. While serving as a state senator, McBride continued to advocate for others, and championed initiatives in healthcare accessibility, public education improvement, and gun safety reform. A popular candidate who had persevered through discrimination at all levels of her career, her strong reputation of relentlessly fighting for the people of Delaware secured her successful path to Congress.

On a national level, Sarah McBride’s elections parked joy as it marked a new era for transgender representation. No longer will transgender people be limited by this glass ceiling–McBride has shattered it, and with a determination to keep rising.

Julie Johnson brings LGBTQ+ Congressional Representation to the South

In November, Julie Johnson was elected to represent Texas’ 32nd Congressional District, making history as the first out LGBTQ+ member of Congress from Texas. Her victory carries significance far beyond the state — Johnson also became the first out LGBTQ+ congressional representative from the South, bringing critical national representation and a powerful voice for LGBTQ+ communities to a region where visibility in Congress has long been limited.

Lavender Ceiling Shattered for Latinas in Congress by Emily Randall

Emily Randall, elected to represent Washington’s 6th Congressional District, made history as the first out LGBTQ+ Latina in the U.S. Congress. A former member of the Washington State Senate, Randall brings both experience and a deep commitment to advocacy at the national level. During her campaign, she emphasized the real-world impact of representation, declaring, “Representation isn’t just symbolic. Having queer and trans people in office saves lives.” Her election not only breaks barriers but also amplifies the voices of communities long underrepresented in Congress.

Historic First: Dave Upthegrove Elected Washington Public Lands Commissioner

In January 2025, Dave Upthegrove made history as Washington’s first out LGBTQ+ statewide executive, sworn in as Public Lands Commissioner. With decades of public service, including roles in the State House and King County Council, Upthegrove now leads the Department of Natural Resources, overseeing nearly 6 million acres of public land. His election marks a major milestone for LGBTQ+ representation in Washington and sets a new precedent for inclusive leadership at the state executive level.

Molly Cook Makes History as Texas' First Out LGBTQ+ State Senator

In a groundbreaking achievement, Molly Cook was elected in May 2024 as the first out LGBTQ+ person to serve in the Texas State Senate. A 32-year-old emergency room nurse and community organizer, Cook secured her position by winning a special election for Senate District 15, succeeding John Whitmire, who resigned to become Houston's mayor. Cook's victory marks a significant milestone for LGBTQ+ representation in Texas, a state with a history of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. Her platform emphasizes support for LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive freedoms, and gun safety, aiming to bring inclusive and compassionate policy to the forefront of Texas politics.

Breaking Barriers: Rashaun Kemp Becomes First LGBTQ+ Black Man Elected to the Legislature

Rashaun Kemp made history by becoming the first out LGBTQ+ Black man elected to his state legislature. His election represents a landmark moment for representation, amplifying the voices of both Black and LGBTQ+ communities in state government. Kemp’s victory underscores the growing diversity of elected officials and the ongoing push for equitable and inclusive leadership across the country.

Historic Upset: Lauren Ashley Simmons Wins Texas State House Seat

Lauren Ashley Simmons made history by winning her election to the Texas State House, unseating an incumbent known for opposing LGBTQ+ rights. Her victory not only adds LGBTQ+ representation in the legislature but also delivers a decisive rebuke to anti-LGBTQ+ policies and voices in Texas politics. By defeating along-standing officeholder resistant to equality, Simmons’ win signals a major step forward for inclusive leadership and empowers LGBTQ+ Texans, sending a clear message that discriminatory rhetoric and policies will no longer go unchallenged.

Trans and Non-Binary Representation Comes to Missouri

In November, Wick Thomas made history by winning election to the Missouri State House of Representatives, representing District 19 in Kansas City. A Missouri native and dedicated librarian, Thomas becomes the first out transgender and nonbinary lawmaker in the state’s history— a milestone that expands visibility and representation for Missouri’s LGBTQ+ community.

Hawai’i Elects Its First Transgender Lawmaker

Kim Coco Iwamoto was elected to Hawai’i’s House of Representatives in November to represent District 25 in Honolulu. Iwamoto brings a wealth of experience from her prior service on the Hawai’i Board of Education. With her victory, she becomes the first out transgender legislator in Hawai’i, breaking new ground for transgender representation in the state’s government and inspiring a new generation of leaders.

Iowa Welcomes Its First Transgender Legislator

Aime Wichtendahl achieved a historic first in November, being elected to Iowa’s 80th State House District in the Cedar Rapids area. Previously serving on the Hiawatha City Council from 2016, Wichtendahl becomes the first out transgender person to hold a seat in Iowa’s state legislature. Her election marks a significant step forward for visibility and inclusion in Iowa government, ensuring that transgender voices are represented at the state level.
